Thursday, October 12th, 2006

FrankensteinI think that title says it all. Thanks to the AFI in Silver Spring, you can get in the Halloween mood by not only watching Frankenstein the original, but also all the bastard children of the film including Bride of, Son of, and Curse of (You-Know-Who). Sweet.

National Gallery of Art Concerts

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

The same people who bring us Jazz in the Garden, Jazz on Ice and Jazz Brunch also nicely provide weekly Sunday evening concerts during the fall and winter. This is the 65th season of concerts in the West Building of the National Gallery - often the programs are matched to a particular exhibition. And they are free (I love Washington). For example, the November 5th concert is English music in honor of the exhibit of Constable Landscapes. The Suspicious Cheese Lords perform Flemish works on November 12th in support of the Neatherlandish exhibit.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Concerts start at 6:30. The cafe will remain open until 6:00 p.m. when there is a concert. Use the entrance at 6th & Constitution.

Bring a story or get reassurance that your job isn’t so bad after all.

Willie Strings Can Blow

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

I was at Dremo’s open mic night (and get out for that while Dremo’s is still there) when someone I hadn’t seen before came in. He turned out to be a long lost member of the tribe, coming by after his own gig up the street. And this turned out to be why I like open mic night. You never know who’s going to show up and what you might discover. And now I know about Willie Strings. You can check out Willie at Ragtime in Arlington on October 19th or at the upcoming second round of the Bodog Battle of the Bands.

Willie transcends genres and blends a variety of traditions to create a sound that is uniquely his own. He played a couple of covers and original songs. I loved his original song that’s still a work in progress but his Sublime cover was indeed sublime. I’ll be looking forward to the opportunity to see him again either solo or with the Players.

Fall means Cider

Friday, October 6th, 2006

I don’t know why, but lately I’ve been more interested in cider than beer, so this announcement from Dave the Beer Guy was of particular interest to me. I made my reservations today, so give a call and make yours - it sounds like it should be fun. Apparently this is the first cider tasting they’ve ever done.

On October 18th at RFD the Ciders of Autumn!

C’mon down and meet Bret Williams and Greg Failing of Vermont’s great Woodchuck Cidery. We’ll taste their ciders, some famous English ciders and we’ll even try some cider ice cream! Tickets for this event are only $30.00 and can be reserved by calling 202-289-2030. Doors open at 6, we never start at 7.

RFD Washington at 810 7th St NW (202-289-2030) is the first restaurant is the city to feature cuisine a la biere, has about 300 of the Bricks best beers in bottles plus 30 more on tap in the front room and 10 more taps in the back room which is available for special occasions.

RFD is one block north of the Verizon Center, 1½ blocks south of the Convention Center and about 50 yards from the multi-line Gallery Place Chinatown Metro on 7th St between H and I - just up from the Starbucks.
